FY 2012 AGS Helion Test Plan

June 22, 2011

Haixin Huang

Overview

o   June 27:  Setup Helion in Booster->AGS (without partial snakes). Possible CNI polarimeter test overnight.

o   June 28:  Setup AGS with cold snake on and low vertical tune. Possible CNI polarimeter test overnight.

o   June 29:  Setup AGS with cold snake on and high vertical tune.

o   June 30:  Buffer zone for any unfinished business.

The goal is to detect recoil carbons by CNI polarimeter and to test the AGS injection with cold snake on.

Job List

·        Set up CNI polarimeter at flattop as soon as beam is available (Kin, Haixin)

·        Measure emittance with AGS IPM on the ramp.

·        Measure tunes on the ramp.

·        Measure chromaticities on the ramp.

·        Beta function measurement at E15 IPM (Haixin, Leif)

·        Measure emittance at flattop with both horizontal and vertical targets.

·        Model comparison data taking if we have chance. (Francois, Yann, Nick)

·        First a few turns A15 profiles (Haixin, Leif)

·        Measure bunch length at injection and flattop (Keith)

·        Measure betatron tune at Booster injection. (Kip)

·        Set up low vertical tune in the Booster on a separated user, if time allowed. (Keith)

·        Take ORM data with snake off and on. Verify magnet survey impact on beta beat (Vincent)

Beam Plans

·        Machine parameters:

o   ν_x=8.70, ν_y~8.9 at injection(archive from last run with snake on).

o   Warm snake current=2670A.(20.2% at injection, 14% at extraction).

o   Cold snake helix current=187A and solenoid current=93.4A. This corresponds to 6% snake for proton, and is 14% snake for Heion (all at flattop).

o   AGS rep rate=4 sec.

o   The injection and extraction energies: = 7.5 and = 49.5, respectively.

Setup with Both Snakes Off

·        Scale BtA from Au cycle. Establish beam in the Booster and then the AGS with both snakes off.

·        Setup RF to establish beam at flattop. No merge is planned for the AGS.

·        REV-TICK and Tunemeter setup.

·        CNI polarimeter setup. The setup can start as soon as beam survives at extraction energy. Prior to this work, the orbits (both horizontal and vertical) at top energy in C15 section should be set as flat (both in time and angle) as possible.

Setup with Both Snakes On

·        Use AGS proton user4 as starting point (except the extraction has to be lowered in Brho). Use proton BtA as starting point. Establish beam in the AGS (injection at =7.5, extraction at = 49.5 with snake on. Start with on-demand mode and intensity of a few 10^10. Turn on cold snake (helical 187A, solenoid 93.4A,trim1 0A, trim2 7A) and E20 warm snake (2670A). Turn on correction quads and bumps for both snakes. While tuning the injection beam survival(first with rf off, then rf on), the beam dump bump (J10) should be on at injection porch. After reaching a few times 10^10 beam survives, remove the dump bump and tune for beam survival along the ramp. It may be efficient to load archives from last run and get beam circulating first with that setting.

·        Commissioning instrumentation if not finished before: AGS tune-meter; IPM.

·        Orbit corrector noise investigation with high vertical tune. If the noise showed up, turn off corrector one by one to find the offender. This is a tedious long process. We probably can not finish it. .

Setup with Low Vertical Tune in the Booster

·        After the AGS set up withhigh vertical tune is done, using a different Booster user to set up low vertical tune (4.11 near injection, below 4.43 at extraction).
