Polarized Proton Run-6 Machine Set Up Plan

*    Cool-Down Mode : 2 weeks (02/01-02/14)

After sometime, Evening and Owl shifts would be available for the beam work. Estimates: ~15 shifts available for beam work.

*      Blue Ring Injection setup

v     AGS to RHIC synchro. The target frequency of 28.128770MHz;  (RF group)

v     AGS extraction and AtR tuning. (Nick Tsoupas and RHIC shift crew)

v     With Blue magnets ready (even without the hysteresis), try the injection to ensure that there is no obvious problems for circulating beam (like obstacles).

v     Continue setup for Blue ring according to “Injection setup” plan in “Setup Mode” below.


*    StartUp Mode: 2 weeks  (02/15-02/28)

3 shifts per day.

*      Injection setup (3 days)  (02/15-02/17)

v     Set injection from ATR into RHIC rings:

§         Injection with kicker off: set bo6-tv9 and yo5-tv9 to 1.3 mrad

§         Injection kicker timing adjustment: (Wolfram)

§         Minimize injection losses.

§         Steer the beam around the ring and achieve continuous circulation.


v     Measure diffusion rates by transverse echo technique with pulsed quadrupole. (Wolfram)

v     Setup snake orbit bumps  and turn on the Snakes. Adjust tunes and vertical orbits. Optimize snake bumps to eliminate injection losses at snake locations.

v     RHIC RF work. (RF group)

v     Instrumentation Setup

§         Tunemeter(Artus) (with upper tunes). (Angelika)

§         Injection damper setup (upper tunes). (Rob)

§         Schottky & PLL. (Pete)

v     Machine tuning

§         Orbit correction below 0.3mm rms.  (Vadim)

§         Optimize bend trim/orbit radius.

§         Optics measurement and correction. (Mei ,Todd)

v     Check the spin pattern request against the measured.

v     Snake current scan at injection ( at least 1 ring)

v     PLL feedback development (Pete, Carl, Al, Yun) (total work requires 6 shifts, but some of it can be done in parallel with other developments)


*      Ramp development (6 days)  (02/18-02/23)

v     Ramp development with 6 bunches

§         Intensity: 0.15-1e11/bunch

§         Use corrector settings (skew and dipole) from last year ramp as starting point

§         Work items:

a)      Radial loops.

b)      Try PLL tune/coupling feedback + orbit correction (Pete, Carl, Al, Yun)

c)      Orbit correction along the ramp ( < 0.7mm rms )

d)      Decoupling along the ramp. (Yun)

e)      Chromaticity along the ramp( chromaticity ~2-3 units) (SteveT)

f)        Verify transverse IR orbit separations and longitudinal relative phase. (Vadim)

v     Experimental magnets, PHENIX and STAR, switch on, when ready. Do necessary ramp adjustments.

v     Rotator ramp development.



Store development (5 days)   (02/24-02/28)

v     6-56 bunches, bunch intensity > 1.e11

v     Establishing collisions. DX BPM timing (Todd).

v     Store optics adjustments:

§         Orbit correction, decoupling, chromaticity.

§         Dispersion function measurements and correction (if needed)

§         IR nonlinear corrections. (Fulvia)

§         Betatron tune scans: verifying available working point window.

§         Optics measurements with AC dipole. (Mei, Todd, Rama)

v     Collimation setup. (Angelika)

v     Evaluation of store reproducibility. Optics comparisons for stores separated by 12h.

v     Evaluation of beam-beam limit:

§         (Gradual) increase in bunch intensity (>1.2e11)

§         Observing lifetime, luminosity and experiment background dependence on the bunch intensity.

§         Measuring beam-beam tune shifts and emittance blowups.

v     Good polarization transmission efficiency on the ramp.

§         Tune and orbit adjustments on the ramp.

§         Polarization measurements on the ramp.

v     Testing 10Hz feedback system (depends on preparedness) (Christoph)

v     Test if the storage cavities can be used to reduce the vertex.





*    RampUp Mode: 1 week  (02/15-02/28)

2 shifts per day; Owl shift for experiment setup.  

*      Ramp development with intense beam (7 days)  (03/01-03/07)

v     111 bunches.  Verify injection kicker timing. Ensure that there is no emittance blowup. (Wolfram)

v     Evaluate pressure rise at the injection with 111 bunches and more than 1.3e11/bunch. (SY, Haixin)

v     Do beam conditioning of vacuum pipe with intense beam, if needed (SY, Haixin)

v     111 bunch ramp development:

§         (Gradually) increase intensity, starting from 1.e11 per bunch.

§         Work on beam losses reduction (orbit, tunes adjustments) on the ramp. Evaluating the intensity limit due to beam losses (if exists)

§         Verify relative longitudinal phase.

§         Collimation on the ramp (in some form). (Angelika)

v     CNI polarimeter tuning. (Sandro, Haixin)

v     Detector background evaluation.

v     Make judgments about optimal operation parameters: number of bunches and bunch intensities, (beta*?)

v     Optimization of the beginning-of-store activities. (Angelika)




*      Physics Running  (03/08- ...)

v     First week: machine development on DAY shift if needed

v     After first week: machine development only occasionally, to fix identified urgent machine problems.
